Yoga while pregnant?
Kairi is here! asked:
Okay well i go to college and for spring quarter im planning on taking a beginners yoga class. I need 12 credit hours for college and without the yoga class ill only have 11 credit hours.. so I pretty much need a 1 credit hour class.. hence the yoga. I know yoga is okay to do while pregnant and can actually be good, but can a yoga class in a college course be okay to take or will it be too much for me? I always hear about prenatal yoga classes, but this is just a regular yoga class. If I tell the instructor about me being pregnant before the class, do you think everything will be okay, as far as my grade goes? I kinda need this class for school, but not at the price if i cant do all the stretches and a get a bad grade or it can hurt the baby
(I’m currently 3 months and will be 6 months when the class is over)

You should talk to the instructor for sure. Usually pregnant women aren’t supposed to take regular yoga classes, just pregnant ones.
A regular Yoga class will be fine. Just tell your teacher that you’re expecting and s/he will create moves that are perfect for your body and your growing baby. Anyone teaching at a college will have ample training in various ‘asanas’ including those that are perfect for pregnancy. Ultimately, if you do 3 months of yoga you’ll find yourself in much better shape for labor and delivery anyway. Good luck!
Your teacher will definitely give you a break on the more difficult poses. She might even recommend some prenatal-type moves for you!!! I’m getting ready to take a prenatal yoga class, very smart that you are taking it
I am not so sure. You shouldn’t do many poses that are done in a regular class such as lying on your back or belly, certain stretches that involve your abdominal muscles, etc. I would consult with the instructor BEFORE you sign up for the class. This way he/she can either say its a good idea or a bad one.
You’ll have no problems with this plan. After all, yoga is not about getting all the poses right or doing everything at the master level or anything. Your instructor, assuming he/she’s is actually certified in yoga, will know which poses you shouldn’t do and how to modify poses for you. This will be very helpful and will not influence your grade at all. All you need to get a good grade in a class like this is to show up and try to do what you can safely do.
Don’t do anything that doesn’t feel good and pay a lot of attention to your body. Read about poses to avoid during pregnancy so you too can judge what you should and shouldn’t do instead of just depending on your instructor:
Many pregnant women take regular yoga classes during pregnancy when there aren’t prenatal yoga classes available. So long as your instructor knows your limitations, there shouldn’t be any problems. If he/she isn’t officially trained in yoga instruction, you should print up some articles like the one linked above and bring it to your instructor so he/she knows what you cannot do. Like any other person with health limitations in exercise, you cannot be judged poorly based on those limitations and your needs must be met.
Yoga is fantastic for pregnancy and it’s a great idea to take this class to fill up your schedule.
