Unsafe yoga positions for second trimester?
clairekerzner asked:
I suck at yoga, but I’ve started taking a pregnancy yoga class to keep fit. I’m 20 weeks pregnant at the moment. The instructor is very experienced (and also the only one in our small town) but I’m doubting some of the things she’s getting us to do.
My main worry is that she has us do about ten or fifteen minutes of exercises lying on our backs, including a really uncomfortable one where we raise our hips off the floor while keeping our shoulders on the ground. The baby goes crazy kicking when I do that, too.
After I did the exercise class yesterday, I came home and found that I had really bad haemorrhoids kinda sticking out (sorry, TMI), and they weren’t there before the class. I’ve heard that too much time on your back can aggravate haemorrhoids by increasing blood pressure in your lower half, so I think it could be related to the yoga.
Am I right to think this woman is getting us to do unsafe moves? Or am I just being paranoid?

she should know what she is doing if its a pregnancy class. however i am a bit skeptical also as you shouldn’t lie flat on back when pregnant.
Maybe just take her to one since and ask her about your concerns
it may not be “unsafe” at your point of gestation but it is getting close to being time to not lay on your back for extended periods of time. if it’s uncomfortable to you i wouldn’t do it. i have a 2nd trimester prenatal yoga video and there are no exercises that require laying on the back or stomach, only the side.
